On the afternoon of November 26, 2024, UnitedHub, known in Chinese as “友和,” hosted a heartwarming Thanksgiving luncheon at a local restaurant . This special event aimed at bringing care and warmth to underserved Asian seniors, with over 40 elderly attendees. They enjoyed delicious food as well as the care and support of their community in a festive atmosphere.
Serving marginalized communities, with a particular focus on Asian seniors in the multicultural Seattle metropolitan area, United Hub has dedicated to promote housing rights, advancing equitable development, assisting with government housing applications and homeownership opportunities, and prioritizing the health and well-being of seniors through tailored services.
UnitedHub’s community elder care initiatives have a history spanning over a decade. Originating as “Westward Public Community” (西漂公社), the organization initially provided support to immigrants and new arrivals in the Greater Seattle area. Over time, it evolved into UnitedHub, expanding its services from small community gatherings to comprehensive programs, including housing assistance, healthcare support, and cultural events. This Thanksgiving luncheon exemplified UnitedHub’s ongoing commitment to honoring seniors and fostering a sense of belonging.
The luncheon began with an atmosphere steeped in culture, as guests signed in using traditional calligraphy, leaving their names with elegant brushstrokes. Several community calligraphy enthusiasts further showcased their talents by composing impromptu poems inspired by the themes of Thanksgiving and community care. One elderly participant penned a five-character quatrain centered on gratitude, presenting it as a gift to the organizers:
“Grateful hearts gather here, love fills the hall.
All are brothers afar and near, united we honor all.”
These calligraphy pieces were displayed at the event, highlighting the wisdom and creativity of the senior participants while adding a cultural touch to the celebration.
The luncheon was catered by Tasty Szechuan, a highly acclaimed Sichuan restaurant. Renowned for its authentic Sichuan flavors and exceptional service, the restaurant prepared a carefully curated menu for the seniors. The restaurant’s owner expressed pride in supporting such a meaningful event, hoping that the carefully prepared dishes would bring warmth and joy to the seniors.
In addition to food and entertainment, the event organizers explained their mission to assist seniors in understanding government benefits and resources. They also offered to host similar events that tailor to the needs of the community.
The event left a lasting impression on both participants and volunteers. Many seniors expressed heartfelt gratitude, with some commenting:
• “This luncheon made me feel the warmth of a family again. I am truly thankful for events like this.”
• “Not only was the food amazing, but the cultural performances and care shown to us made me feel valued.”
Volunteers also found the experience deeply inspiring and encouraging, with many reflecting on the reciprocal nature of community service and how they, too, were enriched by the connections formed during the event.
UnitedHub’s Thanksgiving luncheon successfully combined food, culture, and community care to create a heartfelt celebration for underserved Asian seniors. As an organization with over a decade of experience, UnitedHub continues to uphold its commitment to elder care. From its origins as “Westward Public Community” to its current role as a multifaceted nonprofit, UnitedHub has consistently expanded its impact and strengthened its dedication to supporting underserved communities.
The event not only brought warmth and joy to the seniors but also reinforced UnitedHub’s mission of unity and care for all.
