This year marked the 140th anniversary of the Chinese expulsion in Seattle, an important milestone in remembering a painful chapter of local history when hundreds of Chinese residents were forced out of their homes and community in 1886.  On February 7, 2026, community members came together not only to reflect on the past, but to strengthen community bonds and affirm our shared commitment to inclusion and belonging.

The Chinese Expulsion History Remembrance March began at 10:00 AM, with volunteers arriving as early as 8:30 AM to help set up, welcome participants, and ensure everything ran smoothly despite steady rain. Many volunteers were students from the University of Washington, whose energy and dedication helped create a warm, welcoming environment for attendees of all ages.

The event drew a diverse crowd of community members, families, elders, youth, and local leaders. We were honored to have Seattle City Councilmember Eddie Lin join us with an official proclamation recognizing the significance of the commemoration, and State Representative Janice Zahn brought a Washington State House of Representatives resolution acknowledging the historical impact and contemporary importance of the event.

Throughout the morning, community voices were heard, cultural expression was shared, and stories were reflected upon—connecting the experiences of those who lived through history with the ongoing journey of today’s immigrant and Asian American communities.

Participants then joined a peaceful march. Together we walked historic pathways, affirming that, 140 years later, our community remains strong, resilient, and united.

This event would not have been possible without the generosity and hard work of our volunteers, donors, sponsors, performers, speakers, and organizers. Thank you to everyone who came out, lent a hand, shared a story, lifted spirits, and helped make this commemoration meaningful and memorable—rain and all.

Your support helped transform history into a living, shared experience, and ensured that the lessons of the past continue to inspire and strengthen our community today.
